How to Measure for a Carrier

The three measurements

Length: from the base of the neck, where a collar sits, to the base of the tail. This sets the interior floor length you need.

Height: from the floor to the top of the shoulders while standing. Your pet should be able to stand without their back curving against the roof.

Girth: around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. This is the number that decides whether a structured backpack carrier will actually close comfortably.

Reading the numbers against a carrier

Add roughly two inches to your length measurement for the interior floor, so your pet can lie down without pressing against both ends. Add one to two inches to shoulder height for standing clearance.

For a soft-sided carrier, the pet should be able to turn around in place. If they can only reverse out, the carrier is too small regardless of what the weight limit says.

If you plan to fly

Airline under-seat dimensions vary by carrier and even by aircraft, and they change. Always confirm the current requirement directly with your airline before booking, and measure the carrier itself, not just your pet.

Practice at home first. Short sessions with the carrier open in the living room, then short car trips, do more for travel day than anything you can buy.
